What are private hearing aids?

Clarity in a complex world

At BEEKS Zien en Horen, we notice that many people are unsure about what private hearing aids are. Terms like reimbursement, hearing protocol, categories 1 to 5, the Amsterdam Questionnaire, insured hearing aids and private devices can be overwhelming. It can all get quite confusing. We’re here to explain.

Insured hearing aids vs. private hearing aids

In the Netherlands, there are roughly two markets for hearing aids. Insured hearing aids fall within the reimbursement system of the health insurer. Private hearing aids - also called free-market devices - fall outside of this system and are therefore not reimbursed. These are often the newest and most advanced models. Why are private hearing aids not reimbursed?

Since 2013, health insurers put the prices for hearing aids in categories 1 - 5. Manufacturers can choose to register a device within this system, but because reimbursements are low, they often decide to keep the newest technologies outside of these categories. As a result, the most innovative hearing aids are available as private or free-market models, but they are not covered by insurance.

Costs and tax benefits

If you choose a private hearing aid, it usually won’t be reimbursed by your health insurer. However, there can still be financial benefits. In many cases, the purchase costs are tax deductible, depending on your income. In addition, more and more insurers now offer the option to make an extra payment, granting you access to the latest technologies.

Deductible and personal contribution

If you do not have additional insurance, your mandatory deductible (your so called eigen risico) always applies first. On top of that, there is a personal contribution, which varies per hearing care provider and per category. At BEEKS Zien en Horen, we take the time to explain this clearly, so you know exactly what to expect and won’t be faced with surprises.

Why choose private hearing aids?

Private hearing aids stand out because they contain the newest technology, which helps you hear better in noisy environments. They are often smaller and more discreet and they can be adjusted more precisely to your personal needs. This allows you to get the most out of modern hearing technology and enjoy optimal comfort.
